Using Materia Mundi's "skill" rules in Dolmenwood
They're practically already the same anyways
So, Materia Mundi’s rules are essentially a Dolmenwood hack, at this point. Either could be used for the other with only a few second’s conversion.
Here’s how you’d roll Materia Mundi’s “talent” system into Dolmenwood’s “skills”, keeping Dolmenwood’s skill names mostly intact:
First, a few skills need to be merged to make this work:
The Stalking and Stealth skills are merged into a single skill, called “Stealth”.
The Pick Lock, Legerdemain, and Disarm Mechanism skills all need to be merged into a single skill, called “Legerdemain”. Picking locks and disarming mechanisms now use your Legerdemain threshold.
The “skill thresholds” for all classes are now based on their Dexterity, Intelligence, and Wisdom Abilities.
If your Dexterity is 9 to 12 (+0), your Climb, Legerdemain, and Stealth skill targets all start at 5+ on a d6. If your Dexterity is higher than 12, choose one skill per point of Dexterity bonus to start at 4+. If your Dexterity is lower than 9, choose one skill per point of Dexterity penalty to start at 6+.
If your Intelligence is 9 to 12 (+0), your Detect Magic, Decipher Document, and Monster Lore skill targets all start at 5+ on a d6. If your Intelligence is higher than 12, choose one skill per point of Intelligence bonus to start at 4+. If your Dexterity is lower than 9, choose one skill per point of Intelligence penalty to start at 6+.
If your Wisdom is 9 to 12 (+0), your Spot, Listen, and Survival skill targets all start at 5+ on a d6. If your Wisdom is higher than 12, choose one skill per point of Intelligence bonus to start at 4+. If your Wisdom is lower than 9, choose one skill per point of Intelligence penalty to start at 6+.
The Thief, Bard, and Hunter no longer get “bonus skill points” at level 1; these rules replace those “bonus points”. Each of these classes gain one skill point per level at level 2+.
This is basically Materia Mundi’s Talent system, minus MM’s social skills (Intuition, Bearing, Charm, and Wit). If you decide to use MM’s social skills, then you need to merge Spot and Listen, to “make room” in the Wisdom skill group for Intuition.
